Nestled comfortably on High Street in Mexborough, Wishing Well is more than just a cafe—it’s a cherished local gem that warmly invites you to savor simple, hearty home-cooked meals in a friendly, unpretentious setting. For decades, Wishing Well has been a cornerstone for residents and visitors alike, blending nostalgia with consistently good food and genuine hospitality.
Step inside, and you’ll immediately notice the inviting atmosphere that many patrons describe as both cozy and relaxed. It’s a place where time seems to slow down, offering a moment of comfort amid the bustle of daily life. Longtime customer Leslie Orriss fondly recalls the cafe’s classic charm from the late '60s, reminiscing about private cubicles and lively Saturday crowds from the neighboring shops. This enduring spirit still defines Wishing Well today—a haven for simple, straightforward meals prepared with care and offered at reasonable prices.
The menu leans toward comforting British classics, with breakfast as its standout offering. Expect generously portioned plates that brim with morning favorites: eggs cooked to your liking, sizzling bacon, hearty sausages, and the inevitably linked bread or toast. While one guest suggested a more distinct presentation—perhaps a separate plate for toast to avoid sogginess—most agree the value and flavorful abundance more than compensate. David Clarke praises the “fast and friendly service” and the satisfying portion sizes that keep customers coming back for more.
For lunch, the hearty steak pie with chips and mushy peas exemplifies their straightforward approach. Though one diner noted the pie’s meaty filling was light, the buttery, golden pastry and homey accompaniments contribute to a comforting experience reminiscent of classic British fare enjoyed in a relaxed family kitchen. Service is personalized with a friendly touch, creating moments where visitors don’t just eat but feel part of a warm community—although, as noted by a guest, some youthful staff may benefit from a bit more smile and engagement to enhance the welcoming vibe.
Regulars like Stephanie Ellis love the “lovely little cafe with good atmosphere” and commend Sharon, presumably one of the standout team members who adds to the friendly ambiance. The generally good value means you get more than just a meal—you get a memorable, approachable dining experience that feels truly local.
Whether you’re craving a filling breakfast to set you up for the day or a comforting lunch that tastes like home, Wishing Well remains a steadfast choice in Mexborough’s dining scene. Its blend of nostalgic charm, hearty portions, and genuine service makes it a place worth visiting, returning to, and recommending.
Lovely little cafe with good atmosphere, you get way more for your money here. Sharon is fantastic.
Been here twice. Food was nice had breakfast was very big plate for size amount of food. They put bread on same plate bit strange as gets all greasy and other things like egg. I prefer my bread on different plate but if you take off the bread then plate was too empty for food amount. I would recommend small plate for breakfast and side plate for bread or toast. Spoiled it for me
Fast and friendly service.Plenty of food cooked as requested.Good value for money.Always have the breakfast.
Had steak pie chips and mushy peas, not much meat in the pie but the pastry more than made up for it, was microwaved but if you leave it long enough it’s ok, didn’t like the chips much, they could have been much better, the peas were ok, nothing special. The staff were pleasant and talkative apart from the teenage female who seemed incapable of smiling and interacting, all in all the highlight was the interaction with the staff and the nice pastry which was the major part of the pie.
Has great memories from late 60,s when the cafe had cubicle,s to sit in for a bit privacy with personal friend,s & work mates from modern methods & materials, as well as Clay,s Tv shop when on saturday,s the main was heaving with shoppers you could move in the shop at times. Anyway back to the wishing well the food was great then as it is now simple good home cooking at affordable prices, long may it continue. Thanks.
